Bitcoin is trading at $86,767.30, up 1.1% over 24 hours and 14.6% over the past week, following a rally that pushed it to $87,000, its highest level in eight months. Over $1 billion in positions were liquidated in a single 24-hour stretch on the way there.
Every Bearish Catalyst Fired At Once
Three things happened this month that were each expected to break the rally. The CLARITY Act, crypto’s one shot at federal market structure rules, failed on the Senate floor 49-50, ten votes short of the 60 needed, after two years of lobbying. Coinbase stock fell about 8% that day, Circle fell roughly 10%.
The next day, the Federal Reserve delivered a unanimous 25 basis point rate hike under new chair Kevin Walsh, its first hike since 2023, as the 10-year Treasury yield sat above 5% and the Bank of Japan raised rates to a 31-year high in the same window.
On top of that, the AI trade started cracking too, after Anthropic’s Dario Amodei published an essay warning the industry was outpacing its own safety work, quickly echoed publicly by Sam Altman and Elon Musk. The semiconductor index dropped over 5% by the following Monday, its worst session since July, with Nvidia, ASML, and SoftBank all falling sharply.
Put together, regulatory failure, tightening liquidity, and a wobbling risk trade, this was exactly the setup bears had been waiting for. Bitcoin went to $87,000 anyway.
Liquidation Cascade Tells The Real Story
Roughly $1 billion in crypto positions were wiped out, and $843 million of that, 84% of the total, came from short positions. Between 126,000 and 135,000 accounts were closed during the sharpest hour of the breakout, with single-hour liquidations crossing $300 million, 97% of it shorts.
The mechanics explain why the move fed on itself. Leveraged short positions require only a small adverse price move to get force-closed, and each forced closure means the exchange buys to close the position, pushing price up slightly and triggering the next layer of shorts above it. One wallet reportedly got liquidated four separate times within 14 hours, losing 375 BTC, roughly $32.5 million, doubling down on shorts as price kept climbing against it.
Why None Of The Bad News Actually Stuck
A failed Senate bill changes what politicians agreed to write down, nothing else. It doesn’t affect block production, exchange trading, custody, or peer-to-peer transfers. Crypto grew into a trillion-dollar asset class without US regulatory clarity in the first place.
Institutional buying barely paused either. Between September 14 and 20, right through the worst headlines, Strategy disclosed buying another 950 BTC for $75 million. US spot Bitcoin ETFs did bleed about $450 million on the day of the failed vote, the heaviest single-day redemption since June, but just three sessions later they pulled in $433 million. Morgan Stanley’s Bitcoin ETF has now logged 20 consecutive trading days of net inflows without a single down day.
Total futures open interest didn’t collapse after the rate hike either, it actually rose 7.5% to roughly $156 billion, suggesting this move reflects genuine demand rather than just short-covering mechanics alone.
A Pattern That Isn’t New
Bitcoin has historically rallied hardest during moments that looked the worst. China’s 2021 mining ban knocked out more than half the global hash rate, and Bitcoin still ran from $29,000 to a new all-time high within four months. FTX’s collapse in November 2022 marked the cycle’s absolute bottom. Three US bank failures and USDC briefly losing its peg in March 2023 preceded a roughly 40% Bitcoin rally.
The reverse has held too. Coinbase’s NASDAQ listing in April 2021, arguably crypto’s most triumphant headline ever, marked almost the exact top of that cycle’s leg. Spot ETF approval in January 2024, after years of trying, was followed by Bitcoin falling from $49,000 toward $38,000.
