Ripple Responds to Critical XRP Bug That Threatened Fixed Supply

Key Takeaways

  • The bug could have created spendable XRP beyond its fixed supply.
  • The fix shipped Sept. 25; investigators found no evidence of exploitation.
  • Ripple is expanding simulated attacks and mathematical protocol checks.

Ripple Responds to a Threat to XRP’s Fixed Supply

A critical flaw could have allowed unauthorized XRP creation, prompting Ripple to reinforce security across the XRP Ledger (XRPL). J. Ayo Akinyele, senior director of engineering at RippleX, Ripple’s division supporting development of the public blockchain, outlined the response and security priorities on X on Oct. 10, following the vulnerability’s disclosure the previous day.

Veria AI, a vulnerability-detection system developed by security company Veria Labs, helped uncover the issue through the network’s bug bounty program, which rewards researchers for reporting weaknesses. Akinyele stated:

“The bug had existed in the codebase for over a decade and could have allowed XRP to be created beyond its fixed supply.”

That potential creation of unauthorized tokens threatened a limit established when all 100 billion XRP were created at the network’s inception. The XRP Ledger’s transaction system relies on validators agreeing on payment validity and order rather than mining new coins. Akinyele described developers thoroughly testing the patch and coordinating rapid upgrades with those operators before public disclosure.

How the Bug Could Have Created Unauthorized XRP

The payments engine could incorrectly calculate amounts owed across specially constructed trading offers, allowing sellers to receive more XRP than the buyer paid. The payments engine overflow flaw involved arithmetic exceeding its numerical limit and returning an incorrectly small total. The fix shipped Sept. 25 in xrpld 3.4.1, a release of the server software that processes transactions and maintains ledger records. Investigators found no evidence of public-network exploitation.

The discovery also sharpened Ripple’s focus on artificial intelligence and the need to identify weaknesses more quickly. The Ripple executive emphasized:

“AI is fundamentally changing how quickly vulnerabilities can be discovered.”

His response calls for stronger bounty programs, expanded AI-assisted searches, and adversarial testing, which simulates attacks to expose defects. An internal red team, consisting of specialists conducting controlled attacks, supports this work.

Those priorities build on Ripple’s proactive AI security efforts, including code scanning and reviews intended to detect problems earlier in development. Working with outside researchers and the XRPL Foundation, the team will revisit longstanding assumptions in payments, transaction agreement, and communication between servers. An updated assessment of potential threats will guide those examinations.

Ripple Targets Risks Beyond Individual Bugs

Ripple also intends to accelerate mathematical checks through its collaboration with Common Prefix, a blockchain research and development company, and the XRPL Foundation. Their work applies formal verification to XRP Ledger software to evaluate whether modeled behavior follows defined rules. Akinyele explained that this approach could uncover deeper issues other testing methods might miss.

Existing verification work on the Lending Protocol and Single Asset Vault will inform that expansion. The XRPL lending protocol design would handle loans and repayments on the ledger while borrower assessments occur outside it. Mainnet availability depends on activation of the required amendments, or network rule changes approved by validators.

The related vault is designed to pool one type of asset from depositors, supporting institutional capital pools on XRPL for lending and other functions. Akinyele tied growing financial-infrastructure use to greater responsibility and pledged continued investment with the community. He stressed:

“Our goal isn’t simply to find more bugs. It’s to systematically address the underlying risks and make the XRPL harder to exploit.”
