Ethereum’s [ETH] reclaim of the $2,500 level coincides with a major shift in where the asset is being held.
Since May 2025, exchange balances have fallen from 14.8 million ETH to 25.7 million ETH, representing a decrease of approximately 28%.
This decrease is important because as ETH approaches the next price level at which new purchases will be able to absorb some of the current supply, there may not be enough readily available supply.
During this last rebound period, September’s outflow data indicate that these migrations have been occurring. As a result of this migration, the number of liquid tokens available to immediately sell from exchanges has been reduced.
Whether ETH can maintain its value above $2500 is dependent upon future demand. If demand increases to support the price recovery, the reduction in liquid tokens may help to continue the recovery.
Conversely, if the flow of buyers reverses into sellers, then reduced liquidity may enhance the magnitude of the reversal.
ETH staking tightens supply
As a result of growing staking activity, the amount of liquid ETH continues to dwindle. Staked ETH rose from about 29.8% in September 2025 to 35.56% by September 18, 2026.
Since January, there began to be an increasingly steady trend of growth in ETH staked percentages. This resulted in the percentage of ETH staked exceeding 32% by April, continuing to increase throughout the summer months.
As the amount of ETH being staked continues to rise, more tokens are steadily removed from circulation. This reduces the total supply available for market trading, tightening liquidity over time.
Meanwhile, the Funding Rate sat near 0.0046 as of writing, suggesting leverage has not risen sharply alongside staking. Therefore, it’s worth noting that the rising percentage of ETH being staked will strengthen the overall structure of the supply side of the ETH market.
Thus, the price sensitivity will be more greatly affected by spot demand and the total supply available for trade.
ETH ETFs absorb more supply
As the tightness in liquid supply has met an increasing institutional owner base through ETH ETFs. Total inflows for U.S. Spot ETH ETFs are at approximately $13.25 billion, while total asset size is at approximately $16.7 billion.
That equals around 5.2% of Ethereum’s market value, giving regulated products a much larger role than in May 2025. Notably, BlackRock’s ETHA leads the expansion, with more than $9 billion in assets.
Recent flows remain uneven, however, with daily movements swinging between large outflows and a $143.8 million inflow. This shows institutional demand remains active but inconsistent near $2,500.
However, it is important to note that the increased size of the ETF base does alter the availability of Ethereum’s supply. More coins are moving off open exchanges and into regulated products, reducing the ETH readily available for trading.
