The crypto market is facing yet another sell-off, putting investor confidence to the test as the Bitcoin price slips below $79,000. What initially appeared to be another bout of market weakness has taken a more alarming turn following a reported security exploit estimated at more than $6 billion, potentially one of the largest incidents in crypto’s history. The involvement of Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange, has further shaken market sentiment, raising fresh concerns about exchange security and the safety of digital assets.
The incident has been followed by billions of dollars in liquidations, intensifying selling pressure and triggering a wave of panic across the market. With bearish momentum gaining around, the immediate question is whether sellers have taken control. More importantly, could this sharp correction create the conditions for a recovery, or is the market heading towards a deeper downturn?
Binance $6.3 Exploit: What Happened? How Did the Markets React?
On October 29, an attacker reportedly drained nearly $6.3 billion in digital assets from the wallets linked to Binance. These were further transferred across 10 different blockchains, with most of the funds moved within roughly 20 minutes. The affected networks included Ethereum, Bitcoin, Tron, XRP Ledger, Solana, Arbitrum, Optimism, Base, Avalanche and Polygon.

TRM Labs, a blockchain intelligence company, identified Ethereum as the largest source of outflows, with ~$3.79B in assets, followed by Bitcoin with ~$1.47B, ~$628M on Tron and $296M on XRP Ledger. Stablecoin issuers and blockchain partners moved quickly to freeze funds associated with the incident worth nearly $2.7B in assets. Tether (USDT) froze ~$1.77B, Circle (USDC) ~$825M, Ripple (RLUSD) ~$40M, World Liberty Financial (USD1) ~$27.8M, and Arbitrum froze approximately 8,426 ETH and 74.6M ARB. However, the hacker still controls more than 420K ETH and 18,270 BTC, worth nearly $3B.

Investigation Points to Possible Link With Bitget & Phemex Exploits
The investigation takes another turn after blockchain investigator ZachXBT identified a potential connection between the Binance exploit and a separate $388 million Bitget exploit. According to ZachXBT, stolen funds from both incidents were routed through THORChain and eventually commingled at the same address, suggesting that the same attacker may be behind both operations.

Further on-chain tracking by MistTrack added another link to the investigation. It identified stolen TRX from the Binance incident flowing through the Bitget Wallet Swap Bridge into an address. Notably, this address has previously been used by the attacker behind the Phemex exploit. If these connections are confirmed, the Binance incident may be part of a broader pattern of attacks involving North-Korea-linked actors and cross-chain fund movements.
$1.5B in Crypto Liquidations: How the Sell-off Accelerated
The Binance exploit added further pressure to an already weakening crypto market, triggering a massive liquidation wave across derivatives exchanges. According to the Coinglass data, nearly $1.5 billion in crypto positions were liquidated over the past 24 hours, with the long positions accounting for nearly $1.29 billion.

Bitcoin and Ethereum recorded the largest liquidation volumes with $498M & $359M, respectively, highlighting how quickly bullish positioning unravelled as prices declined. When leveraged long positions fall below their required margin levels, exchanges automatically close them, generating additional sell orders. This creates a cascading effect, where falling prices trigger forced selling, which in turn pushes prices lower and exposes more leveraged positions to liquidation.
What Next? Will the Crypto Markets Recover?
The latest $6.3B exploit has raised concerns about the exchange infrastructure, while coordinated response from Tether, Circle, Ripple, Arbitrum & other industry participants highlights how critical cross-platform cooperation has become in containing such incidents. On the other hand, the liquidation in billions suggests that the market was already vulnerable to a sharp correction.
For Bitcoin, the immediate challenge is to regain lost ground and demonstrate that selling pressure is easing. Until then, the fear of a sharp correction may haunt the BTC price rally, which may trigger another crypto market sell-off.
