Banking giant Wells Fargo says it has suffered a data breach that exposed sensitive information about at least two of its customers.
In a letter, the California-based financial giant says personal information and mortgage account numbers have been exposed.
Wells Fargo says one of its employees is responsible for the data breach, although it is not clear how or why the employee accessed and disclosed the information.
“Wells Fargo has taken appropriate action regarding the employee, consistent with our policies and procedures.”
In a statement to CyberNews, a Wells Fargo representative said the employee at the center of the incident has been fired.
“Wells Fargo was not involved in a cyber attack. An employee violated company policy by sending information to his personal account. The person is no longer employed by Wells Fargo.
Two customers receive a notification letter about a data breach. The needs of our customers are at the heart of everything we do and we regret any inconvenience this may cause.”
Wells Fargo says it monitors their accounts for suspicious activity and is now offering victims a two-year free identity theft protection program from Experian.
