TL;DR
-
ICYMI, yesterday was Bitcoin Pizza Day. The day celebrating Laszlo Hanyecz’s decision to request a pizza (paid in Bitcoin) in 2010 on an internet forum.
-
Laszlo paid 10,000 BTC for two Papa John’s Pizzas (~$40 USD at the time, a cool $268M at today’s prices).
-
The transaction itself did two things: used Bitcoin as a medium of exchange for a daily purchase, in a very public mansion.
-
Gave a price anchor to everyone/everyone watching Bitcoin. That is, they gave them a moment to point back to and say “that pizza is now worth $X in today’s money.”

So what’s the meaning? Are we all just preoccupied with Laszlo and reminding him of his lost fortune?
Not really.
Laszlo has said in the past that he does not regret his decision, which we read as “I had saved way over 10,000 BTC. I’m fine, thank you.’
The transaction itself did two things:
-
Used Bitcoin as a medium of exchange for a daily purchase, in a very public mansion.
-
Gave a price anchor to everyone/everyone who looked at Bitcoin (which made up the entire blockchain industry at the time). That is, they were given a moment to point back and say “that pizza is now worth $X in today’s money” (as we did at the beginning of this article).
Anyway, this is all to say:
Happy (belated) Bitcoin Pizza Day everyone!
