A Vitalik Buterin-themed NFT collection that stores the image data directly Ethereum ETH + became the blockchain’s biggest gas guzzler on Friday, causing a brief spike in Gwei.
The project, called Buterin Cards, had consumed 13.1% of its total gas units in the past three hours as of 3:00 PM ET, ranking it higher than the Uniswap universal router address and Tether’s public address, according to Ethereum blockchain explorer Etherscan. . The collection caused transaction fees of 318.31 ETH worth $665,670 in the last 24 hours.
After the peak, gas consumption has since fallen behind Uniswap.
What are Buterin cards?
The Buterin Cards project aims to upload 2,015 NFTs in tribute to Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of the Ethereum blockchain. The project uses an NFT mining process called JPEG mining, which stores image data on-chain, unlike a typical NFT that only stores metadata on-chain.
“To prevent miners from uploading arbitrary data, the smart contract verifies the accuracy of the data by calculating the hash. Thanks to progressive JPEG technology, the NFT image is gradually revealed as it is mined,” according to the project’s website .
βIn exchange for their work, miners receive a card with an image of Vitalik Buterin at different levels of quality,β it added.
