The Sandbox, a decentralized virtual world, has reached a major milestone: more than 1,000 user-generated experiences have been created and are now available on the platform. This vibrant landscape showcases the creativity and innovation of the community, made up of brands, gaming companies and individual users.
A thriving creative ecosystem
Updates to the Game Maker tool and platform infrastructure, along with new earning opportunities, have led to notable success for creators on The Sandbox. Since 2021, creators have received more than $30 million from the sale of assets, royalties and funds intended to support them. The Sandbox says this is just the beginning for creators as the platform and its creative community evolve.
During the first Creators Day in Hong Kong last November, The Sandbox announced a self-publishing tool that allows users to launch their own experiences and track their performance. Since this announcement, more than 1,000 experiences have been published, showcasing a wide range of creativity, from adventure and racing to replicas of famous cities. The Game Maker tool has been instrumental in bringing these diverse ideas to life.
To increase the number of high-quality experiences, The Sandbox launched the Builders’ Challenge on February 12. This ten-week competition rewards creators based on player engagement, with five weeks remaining to win a share of the prize pool. In honor of the 1,000 experience milestone, The Sandbox is introducing an additional reward pool of 500,000 SAND for the top ten creators, increasing the total reward for Builders’ Challenge participants.
The past year also saw a major increase in the use of The Sandbox, Game Maker and VoxEdit creation tools, with more than 330,000 creators and more than 200 professional studios actively involved. The release of Game Maker 0.9 introduced new gameplay mechanics and improved visuals, further fueling this creative momentum. Additionally, the community has developed 3,300 unique Voxel assets, of which more than 500,000 have been minted.
The sandpit continues to support its creator community through interactive programs such as Game Jams, which have attracted more than 2,500 creators in 2024 alone. In all, with nine more Game Jams and substantial Builders’ Challenge prizes to come, The Sandbox aims to provide numerous opportunities for creators to monetize their work, making it an exciting time to be part of this decentralized virtual world.
