While Thailand goes to digital transformation, the country’s telecommunication watchdog takes on the challenge of transforming important economic sectors.
The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) has unveiled various initiatives to bring Thailand closer to full-scaly digitization. The NBTC revealed its plans on the Fossasia Summit 2025 and attracted large players in the open-source space.
In his keynote speech, NBTC chairman Pachara Naripthaphan revealed plans to bring about a revolution in the public contracting process. Currently, Thailand’s purchasing processes are hindered by bureaucracy and multiple regulations, making the use of emerging technologies and digitization can achieve a challenge.
Nariphaphan wants to integrate advanced tools and artificial intelligence (AI) into existing purchasing processes. This would enable the country to eliminate excessive government spending and unnecessary delays.
“For example, the Open Mapping of Street Mapping Development Project, for which the private sector has been advocating in the past two years, has experienced challenges within the government’s purchasing process,” said Naripthaphan.
Apart from AI integration and rolling out big data initiatives, the NBTC develops plans for open access and argues for citizens to possess part of the state management system.
Although the committee does not fully work out its plans for open access, experts say that the NBTC can accept ideas of decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) for new administrative standards.
Achieving full digitization will require significant efforts from the NBTC, but Nariputhaphan is optimistic that Thailand can achieve this goal by increasing the consciousness and knowledge of citizens on AI and other emerging technologies. In accordance with this, he shared plans to emerge AI courses in the education system to deepen the talent pool.
In addition, the NBTC will argue for open-source standards for emerging technologies and AI to adapt to the goal of becoming a leader in the Asia-Pacific region.
