Pro-XRP attorney and Senate hopeful John Deaton is reportedly filing an amicus brief in support of US-based crypto exchange Coinbase.
According to court documents revealed by Fox Business journalist Eleanor Terrett, Deaton is archived for permission to appear in court in support of 4,701 Coinbase customers in the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) lawsuit against the crypto exchange.
Terrett say that before launching his campaign for Senate in Massachusetts, Deaton said he would file an amicus brief on behalf of the clients if the case ever went to trial or appealed, which is the case.
An amicus brief is when a person or entity not part of the case asks the court for permission to provide assistance to a party by offering expertise, insights, and information relevant to the case.
Deaton announced earlier this year that, with the support of the Winklevoss twins, Skybridge Capital CEO Anthony Scaramucci and Ripple executives, he will run for the Senate position of incumbent Elizabeth Warren, a senator known to be anti- has crypto views.
If declared by Deaton in an interview with Terrett,
“I will fight for that person who has $2,000, $500 or $5,000 in savings in Bitcoin or whatever until the day I die.
This isn’t about crypto, this is about freedom, this is about upward mobility, this is about people who want a fighting chance, people who want to build a little wealth. They are not out to get rich, they are not ‘crypto bros’, they are just regular people [who want] a small exposure to this alternative asset class.”
The SEC first filed a lawsuit against Coinbase in 2023, alleging that the crypto exchange had violated numerous securities laws, including selling unregistered securities.
