TL;DR
Full story
Web3 is still waiting for its “killer application” – that “thing” that will bring millions/billions of new users to space.
… and this NFT-gated video calling feature in the Brave browser … well, it’s not that application.
BUT! It’s a nice reimagining of an already proven use case for NFTs: community access.
Currently, most gated online Web3 communities use NFTs to allow holders to access a Discord channel.
There is only one problem: Discord SUCKS.
Chatting on the platform is a cohesive mishmash of lost notifications and broken threads.
Point is, when we think of “intimate online communities,” we don’t think of Discord.
(Or maybe we’re just in the wrong communities, who knows ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)
Either way – small, closed-circle video chats will always be more intimate than text-based interactions with a large audience.
And that seems to be what Brave’s “Brave Talk” NFT-gated video chats seem to accomplish: intimate NFT-gated video interactions.
Revolutionary? No.
Welcome? Yes.
