The Balkan country Montenegro reportedly wants to extradite disgraced Terra (LUNA) founder Do Kwon to the United States.
Citing “people familiar with the matter,” the Wall Street Journal reports that Montenegro’s Justice Minister Andrej Milovic has privately said he plans to ship Kwon to the U.S. instead of South Korea. which also wants to prosecute the former CEO of Terraform Labs.
Kwon was initially arrested in Montenegro in late March after attempting to board a flight to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) using a forged Costa Rican passport.
The former CEO was sentenced to four months in prison, but authorities in both the United States and South Korea want him extradited to face fraud charges stemming from the implosion of the $40 billion Terra ecosystem in 2022.
Last month, a court in Montenegro approved Kwon’s extradition to both countries, but Kwon subsequently appealed the ruling. Milovic, the justice minister, will likely wait to announce his decision to side with the U.S. until after the court rules on Kwon’s appeal, the Wall Street Journal said.
Dan Sunghan, the director of the Financial Crime Investigation Bureau of the Seoul Southern District Prosecutor’s Office, told Bloomberg in June that Kwon could spend more than four decades behind bars.
