Pop quiz: What the heck actually is the McDonald’s purple character Grimace?
(Answer at the end of the article).
While we’re on the topic of Grimace, who knew he (she? it? We’ll stick with ‘he’) would be the focus of McDonalds’ latest foray into NFTs?
Maybe it was his recent rise to fame in one of the weirdest TikTok trends out there, or maybe people genuinely want to collect the weird lookin’ fella.
Either way, McDonald’s Singapore is giving away 2000 total NFTs featuring the purple dude, with various expressions and accessories.
They’ll be free to claim, and available through the McDonald’s mobile app in Singapore.
One interesting piece to this is that they will be soulbound, which means once they’ve been minted, they’ll belong to that wallet for life.
(I.e. McDonald’s wont make money through secondary sales)
Which begs the question: why would Mickey D’s do this at all?
We don’t really know, but we have some ideas…
In their press release, McDonald’s said: Owners of the Grimace NFTs will have access to “exclusive treats in the future.”
So maybe it’s a way to increase sales through deals like “buy 1 Big Mac, get 1 free” – where zero intention to buy a Big Mac suddenly turns into $5 spent and 2 Big Macs consumed.
Or maybe they’re using Singapore as a test case for something much, much bigger (?)
McDonald’s has already created a playable world in The Sandbox metaverse, and launched a commemorative McRib sandwich NFT collection in the past.
Could they be figuring things out during the bear market for a much larger launch of an NFT-based loyalty program when the next bull run comes?
We will soon find out!
