Is Ripple’s XRPL superior to Bitcoin’s Lightning Network?

  • A core developer of the Lightning Network left, leading to discussions about the L2’s sustainability.
  • In comparison, the XRPL and Bitcoin Lightning Network have their ups and downs.

Bitcoins [BTC] Lightning Network has received a lot of criticism lately. But is Ripple [XRP] Ledger (XRPL) network a scalable solution at a higher level than the L2 of the king coin? This is a debate that has sparked differing opinions online, especially on X (formerly Twitter).

Realistic or not, here it is The market cap of XRP in BTC terms

But around the world, there has been one that has caught the market’s attention. This line of thinking came from John. E. Deaton, and it may be worth investigating.

According to Deaton, a well-known supporter of the Ripple project, SpendTheBits, a digital payment platform powered by XRPL, was a better alternative to Lightning network.

Let me be clear and transparent: I am involved now @Spend_The_Bits as an angel investor and as Chief Legal Officer. So please accept my comments with that in mind. But an important reason I invested in it @Spend_The_Bitsor rather, invested in… https://t.co/aheyTxjGxp

— John E. Deaton (@JohnEDeaton1) October 21, 2023

Lightning challenges end in a core room

Deaton’s point didn’t just come out of the blue. He was actually responding to the revelation that one of Bitcoin’s Lightning developers had left the project.

The core developer Antoine Riard, in its entirety revelation, said his decision to leave was due to the high security issues facing the network, which remained unresolved. He noted that,

“I think this new class of replacement cycle attack puts Lightning in a very dangerous position, where only a sustainable solution can happen at the base layer, for example adding a memory-intensive history of all transactions seen or a consensus upgrade.”

In recent times, the Bitcoin Lightning Network has recorded an increase in adoption, for example at Binance integrate It. However, Deaton believes that the network’s cheap and fast features were nowhere near XRPL’s SpendTheBits.

However, the lawyer gave no convincing reason other than the fact that he was an investor in the project. So bias does not have to be a valid reason to reject the Lightning Network’s assets. So a simple evaluation of both XRPL and the on-chain condition of the Lightning Network could provide some insight into which is better.

An uneven distribution remains a cause

To assess the capabilities of the Lightning Network, one metric to look at is the Gini capacity distribution. This statistic is calculated by comparing the actual distribution of Bitcoin capacity across the nodes with a hypothetical uniform distribution.

With a value ranging from 0-1, the Gini coefficient provides insight TThe degree of centralization and potential risks associated with a highly concentrated distribution of Bitcoin capacity.

Usually values closer to 1 indicate a more unequal distribution of Bitcoin capacity across nodes. Conversely, a lower Gini coefficient indicates a more even distribution of Bitcoin capacity. At the time of writing, Bitcoin Gini’s capacity distribution was 0.96, as shown above.

This jump seems to justify Riard’s decision to quit, given the high degree of uneven distribution. But does that make XRPL better than the Lightning Network? Well, that can be a difficult conclusion to come to.

XRPL is not quite as white as snow

Looking again at on-chain data, but this time in the direction of XRPL, Santiment showed that there is an increase in the number of trustlines created. Trustlines on the XRP Ledger are structures created to hold tokens owned only by an issuer.

While the walk may be impressive, the XRPL also had its own downside. This was because new assets issued on the ledger had been in short supply for several weeks.

In short, both the XPRL and the Bitcoin Lightning Network have their strongholds. At the same time, the network has no challenges. In terms of which is better, leaving that up to the users can be a good decision.

For example, there have been updates aimed at improving the XRPL main net. One thing is also certain: regardless of the recent drawbacks, the Bitcoin Lightning team is constantly working on solutions.
