Bitcoin Cash is taking a decisive step toward long-term survival in the post-quantum era. Developer Jason Dreyzehner has published Quantumroot, an integration-ready contract system designed to make Bitcoin Cash the first major blockchain with a practical, scalable, and fully-implemented post-quantum security solution.
The release arrives as concerns grow around the accelerating pace of quantum computing breakthroughs and the increasing likelihood that cryptocurrencies will be among the earliest targets of a Cryptographically-Relevant Quantum Computer (CRQC).
For Dreyzehner, “quantum readiness” means more than swapping out cryptographic primitives. It means ensuring that millions of users can transition smoothly, without mass theft, network collapse, or emergency forks. “Cryptocurrencies that aren’t quantum ready would be vulnerable to mass theft,” he explained, noting that Proof-of-Stake networks could even have their consensus hijacked. Because decentralized systems cannot simply patch centralized servers, migrating users and funds to post-quantum addresses could take years, making proactive preparation not optional but necessary.
Quantumroot stands out from existing proposals in both design and execution. By using the UTXO model and CashVM’s introspection features, Quantumroot achieves 100–1000× lower fees than equivalent vaults on Ethereum, avoids privacy leaks, and even delivers fee savings compared to today’s common BCH/BTC wallets.
Dreyzehner describes Quantumroot’s cryptography as “maximally conservative.” Bitcoin Cash’s 2025 and 2026 upgrades have made this possible without further consensus changes. Quantumroot vaults are already live, with contracts, test suites, and transaction-generation tools available for wallet developers.
CashVM’s efficiency allows massive aggregation, up to 800 inputs or 400 unique addresses in a single 100KB post-quantum transaction, and makes fully validating BCH nodes far more scalable. “That translates to higher capacity, lower fees, and stronger censorship-resistance,” Dreyzehner said. “Exactly what’s needed to migrate millions of users to post-quantum vaults.”

The timeline of the quantum threat remains uncertain, but Dreyzehner argues the risks are asymmetric. CRQCs could arrive decades from now or before 2030, with much of the critical global infrastructure already deploying quantum-safe systems. Bitcoin Cash, by contrast, can begin integrating post-quantum vaults today, and Quantumroot offers immediate UX and fee benefits.
If successfully deployed across wallets, Quantumroot could reshape Bitcoin Cash’s position in the digital economy. “It reinforces BCH’s position as a multi-decade reserve asset,” Dreyzehner said. “Quantumroot makes Bitcoin Cash more reliable, both as sound money and as a peer-to-peer cash system.”
