The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is warning Americans about fake job postings that harass job applicants to commit crypto fraud.
According to a new public service announcement from the FBI, fake job postings related to labor trafficking in Southeast Asia are leveraging fraud schemes to lure, detain and intimidate people into committing crypto fraud.
“Criminal actors are targeting victims, mainly in Asia, in employment fraud by posting false job advertisements on social media and online job boards.
The programs cover a wide range of opportunities, including technical support, call center customer service, and beauty salon technicians. Job seekers are offered competitive salaries, lucrative benefits, paid travel expenses, and room and board. Often throughout the process, the location for the feature is shifted from the advertised location.
Upon arrival of job seekers abroad, criminal actors use multiple means to coerce them into cryptocurrency investment programs, such as confiscation of passports and travel documents, threats of force, and use of force.
To control the victims, the bad actors place false debts on them and use the threat of possible jail time.
“Criminal actors assign debts to victims under the guise of travel and room and board expenses, using victims’ mounting debts and fear of local law enforcement as additional means of controlling victims. Trafficking victims are sometimes sold and transferred from one complex to another, adding to their debts.”
