Canadian police are issuing a warning to cryptocurrency investors, saying thieves are breaking into homes to steal digital assets by force.
Police in Richmond and Delta, both south of Vancouver, have issued warnings of a series of burglary incidents, which appear to be linked by a noticeable modus operandi (MO).
According to law enforcement agencies, the suspects gained access to the homes of crypto investors by posing as delivery drivers or some sort of authority figure. Once inside the home, the suspects forcibly obtain information that gives access to the homeowner’s cryptocurrency accounts, believed to be private keys or seed phrases.
The police participation that the suspects are well aware that their targets have large cryptocurrency holdings. They also say there are likely more robberies related to the scheme, but not all victims have come forward.
So says Staff Sergeant Jill Long of Delta Police Investigative Services.
“The suspects seem to know that the victims are heavily invested in cryptocurrency, know where they live and rob them in their own homes…
If you or someone you know has been the victim of one of these robberies, please call the police… You may have important information that could help our investigators.”
Only one arrest has been made in connection with the series of thefts, the Delta Police reported.
