Coinbase-backed base, an Ethereum Layer 2 network, will undergo important upgrades to make it faster, cheaper and more decentralized.
Jesse Pollak, the main developer of BASE, placed the upgrade plans of the network on X on 24 May.
Basic goals overhaul that Solana and Sui can challenge
The Coinbase Executive explained that the improvements would scale the basis to meet the increasing demand of both users and developers
According to Pollak, the team works to reduce transaction confirmation times to 200 milliseconds and network costs consistently below $ 0.01.
These two goals are part of a broader plan to process more than 200 transactions per second in the short term. Pollak confirmed that the base ultimately aims to reach 1 million TPS.
Pollak also emphasized that the basis is on its way to a more decentralized architecture. The plan includes the shifting of important components of the protocol, such as the Base State Transition Logic, directly on Layer 1 of Ethereum via smart contracts.
This change would enable several independent developers and validators to shape the evolution of the network.
Base undergoes various infrastructure upgrades to support these improvements. The goal is to make it the most scalable and user-friendly Ethereum Layer 2 network.
A central part of the upgrade is Flashblocks, a system that makes almost instant “forecasts” possible to give users a faster and smoother experience. The team is already conducting test network tests and expects to introduce the update on Mavet in the summer of 2025.
The network supported by Coinbase is also planning to expand its gas transit. Basic focuses on an increase in the current 25 million gas per second (MGAS/S) to 50 mgas/s in Q2, which ultimately reaches 250 mgas/s towards the end of the year. This would mark a 100-time improvement compared to its original capacity.
Pollak believes that these upgrades will significantly improve the speed and efficiency of base. Once fully implemented, they could position the network as a strong competitor for chains such as Solana and Sui.
