Binance founder and former CEO Changpeng Zhao reveals his plans for the future following his release from prison after serving a four-month prison sentence.
Zhao say that Giggle Academy – his education startup aimed at reducing global illiteracy – will be a “big part” of his life in the coming years.
The mission of Giggle Academy, which launched as a nonprofit earlier this year, is to provide free primary education (levels 1 to 12) in a way that “entertains children around the world.” The zero-revenue education platform, which is completely online, aims to offer an adaptive individualized curriculum.
On other ventures he will pursue, the Binance founder says:
“[I] Will continue to invest in blockchain/decentralized technologies, artificial intelligence (AI) and biotechnology. I am a long-term investor who values impact, not returns.
I will also spend more time and money on charities (and education). I have some rough ideas.”
Zhao also says he will continue writing a book about his life.
“About 2/3 done, I think. Writing a book is a lot more work than I expected, but I will accomplish it.”
The founder of Binance was reportedly released on September 27 after spending about two months in Lompoc II, a minimum-security prison in California, and the remainder of his sentence in a halfway house.
He stepped down as CEO of the world’s largest crypto exchange in November 2023 after pleading guilty to violating US anti-money laundering laws.
In addition to the four-month prison sentence, Zhao was fined $50 million. Before beginning his prison sentence, Zhao vowed to remain a passive investor in the cryptocurrency industry and holder of crypto assets.
