Avalanche scores high on green ratings
The research firm, which maps the environmental impact of cryptocurrencies, found that Avalanche was sucking in 469,802.39 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity annually as of June 1, 2023.
For context, this was only 8.2% of the energy Ethereum consumed [ETH]and an order of magnitude lower than that of the proof-of-work (PoW) chain Bitcoin [BTC].
The report also found that Avalanche’s annual energy consumption was equal to the annual consumption of 44 average U.S. households.
Furthermore, Avalanche was one of the least environmentally polluting PoS networks, emitting only 178.3 tCO2e per year. Indeed, its carbon footprint was a tiny fraction of that of Ethereum and Solana [SOL]and equal to the emissions of 29 round trips from Munich to San Francisco.
The study also shows that Avalanche’s electricity consumption has decreased by 4% compared to last year, despite the increase in subgrid use.
Over the years, blockchains’ increased energy consumption and carbon emissions have become a major sticking point between skeptics and proponents of the technology.
Most of the criticism has been aimed at PoW networks, which use energy-hungry machines. Fearing a tarnish on their image and future growth opportunities, many solutions shifted to the PoS approach.
Since then, various stakeholders, such as investors, users and regulators, have been actively monitoring the climate impact of blockchains. Against this backdrop, Avalanche’s impressive green indicators bode well for future investment and adoption.

A tour of the Avalanche ecosystem
While Avalanche earned praise for its green credentials, native token AVAX remained isolated from this achievement. The coin lost 2.55% of its value in the past 24 hours $8.91 as of press time.
According to Avalanche researcher approximately 77 Subnets were up and running at the time of writing, with 1,464 validators. The total number of transactions processed on subnets and the C-Chain has been intermittent over the past two weeks, as shown below.
