In an effort to close the global digital divide, peaq, a blockchain platform designed for real-world applications, has partnered with Wayru to expand internet access. Wayru, a project aimed at creating a decentralized physical infrastructure network (DePIN) of community-operated web hotspots, aims to provide affordable and secure internet access.

The integration with peaq will allow Wayru to make its WiFi hotspot firmware compatible with the network and link its mobile app to the blockchain. This means users can set up their hotspots on peaq, allowing Wayru operators to migrate, earn rewards in the Web3 Economy of Things, and use Peaq’s Machine DeFi.
Although internet access is often taken for granted in the developed world, approximately 3 billion people worldwide lack this vital resource. In regions like Latin America (LATAM) and the US, millions of people do not have access to the internet, impacting the way we learn, connect and do business.
Wayru is on a mission to close this digital divide, especially in LATAM and the US, by allowing people to share their internet connections and earn rewards in its $WRU token.
Users can join the network by purchasing the Genesis hotspot or installing WayruOS on compatible devices. Once devices are released as Non-Fungible Nodes (NFNs), operators can earn rewards based on performance, giving users access to the network and affordable Internet browsing.
The integration with peaq furthers Wayru’s mission to connect the unconnected by leveraging peaq’s modular DePIN features. This includes multi-chain peaq IDs, peer-to-peer machine payments, and role-based access control. Additionally, Wayru users can earn rewards as part of the Economy of Things and use peaq’s Machine DeFi to set up new hotspots.
Wayru’s achievements
The Wayru network currently has more than 500 hotspots. Wayru has established strategic partnerships with organizations such as the UN/UNHCR. Last year, the network served over 250,000 unique users, with 50,000 unique monthly active users worldwide. During this period, more than 3 million GB were used on the network.
Charvel Chedraui, CEO of Wayru, emphasizes their broader vision than DePIN:
“We build more than a DePIN. The end goal is to make the internet more decentralized and give people more ownership over it. This vision fits perfectly with peaq’s values and increases our ability to scale.”
“The global digital divide is a critical barrier to our progress as a society,” said Till Wendler, co-founder of peaq. “The DePIN model is perfect for solving the crisis because it gives everyone more ownership in the infrastructure that powers the global web. It is exciting to see that Wayru has applied this concept to peaq with such a noble goal in mind.”
The partnership between Wayru and peaq marks an important step toward democratizing internet access and strengthening communities around the world.
