Energy giants are preparing to pay $50 million to settle allegations that they conspired to fix gas prices.
Vitol, SK Energy Americas and parent company SK Trading International are accused of conspiring to raise gas prices in violation of California’s Cartwright Act and Unfair Competition Law.
Without admitting wrongdoing, the trio has agreed to settle a lawsuit from the California attorney general and a class action lawsuit at the same time.
The outcome will send approximately $37.5 million to class members.
People who purchased gas in several Southern California counties between February 20, 2015 and November 10, 2015 are eligible to file a claim.

The deadline to file a claim is January 8 and claims can be filed at vlc.calgaslitigation.com.
California’s attorney general filed a lawsuit against the gas companies in 2020, accusing them of conspiring to fix prices in the aftermath of a 2015 Torrance refinery explosion.
The companies allegedly manipulated the spot market to illegally raise gas prices, making profits at the expense of California consumers.
